podcast

Listen!

I did a podcast for the evaluation, as a different means of presentation.
In this podcast I answer these four questions:
-In what ways does your media product usem, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
-How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary products?
-What have you learned from your audience feedback?
-How did you use media technologies in the construction, research, planning and evaluation stages?

Evaluation

For our evaluation we decided to produce a powerpoint and film ourselves in front of a screen with the powerpoint behind us and us taling about what is on the screen, how we decided topics and so on.

Evaluation

We decided to film our selves in front of the camera and talk throgh our powerpoint. The first draft powerpoint had some missing parts so I went home and looked at other people's evaluation style and got the idea of how to answer the questions better and present it.

As I was doing the presentation I felt comfortable because there were pictures to help me and key words. Last time when we had to evaluate for the opening sequence of a film and did our evaluation in front of the camera with just the questions I felt uncomfortable. So this time preparing the power point really helped me a lot. The power point is there to evaluate our final product but the blogging I believe is the evaluation of everything and without research and experiments we would not have achieved what we have done already.

If we had more time, I would really think things through in more depth and prepare at head of time because you don't know what is going to happen and always have plan B. Through this assessment I learnt things like being punctual, orgnised and write every detail like what we said and why it would work or not. But overall I really enjoyed it becasue it was a time where I could learn other types of music rather than the things I usually listen to and learn the backround and the culture.

Types of editing

These are some screen shots of our music video, I want to talk about the types of editing we used in detail because we used the technique to show the relationship with the lyrics/visuals and visuals/sound. Also to give more effectiveness wthin the music video.

For this we used peep hole editing to create voyeurism and the lyrics matches the visuals as she says the words. Also its a shot where all the members of the band are shown which indicates their unity of one as a band.
This shot we used water colour, first we thought we had to put some editing to look good but when we applyed it, it made the guitarists to stand out from the graffity backround. Also this shot shows therelationship between visuals and sound.
For this we used colours to give the filter affect that we could not do due to some problems. As I expected it worked really well withthe style of punk music.
This one we used clour TV and old black and white, as it is how like an old TV. It is a good shot with two guitarist placed diagonally one pointing to the other. We used this to show different techniques and the characteristics of the guitarists because both of them are quite shy and quite.

The technique above is N-square and edges, its our second scene of our music video we though to start with the guitar as there is guitar sound only which matches the sound and visuals. Also N-square is used to show that the artist is falling apart, her feelings and thoughts and she is confused. Edges used to show her dark side and it matches well with the guitar shown.

Through out the video we used the same editing skills to show continuity of the scenes.

Record Company (Institutions) 'Epitaph' and 'Fueled by Ramen'

I set my friends on fire
We searched into google 'rock indie record companies'. One that came up was Epitaph, this record company has promoted bands such as 'I set my friends on Fire' and 'Bring me the horizon'. We believe that Epitaph would promote our band because it is the similar kind of music to what they already promote. 'Bring me the Horizon' has become a very well known band, especially in the indie rock sections in music stores and online. When comparing our band to the other bands on this site; the bands are mainly all male. I believe the reason to this could be rock and punk music can be quite violent and explicit and when talking about stereotypes female shouldn't been seen saying or watching things like that. But that is what makes our band so unique is that we are a full female rock indie band. But there was one band that had a female in it they were called, 'Heartsounds'. So not everyone matches the stereotypes.

Bring me the Horizon

When looking at our CD cover some bands from the record  label; a few of the bands have a similar style. i think out of most of the bands off this Record label; the one that looks most like our CD cover was Bad Religion. Not because of the person but because of the fuzziness to the picture. Our CD cover sort of has this effect too.

Bad Religion

For our research i looked at Paramore because this band has a rock genre and and bit punk genre too. There record label is 'Fueled by Ramen'. Other bands that are also from Fueled by Ramen are 'Versa Emerge', 'Panic! At the Disco' and 'Cobra Starship'. Another reason i looked into Paramore was because the band had a female in it. Plus because i was being the singing in the band this would be a good band to look in to and learn how the singer acts. Fueled by Ramen has some more bands that have females in them that Epitaph so there is more of a chance that this record label would promote us more than Epitaph. Another band that we did look at was Versa Emerge; the lead singer of this band is also female.

When looking at the CD covers from the bands with the record label 'Fueled by ramen' the bands with females in it don't really match our CD cover but the CD cover and digi pack is more up to the band not the record label.

In Conclusion i would say that 'Fueled by Ramen' is more likely to promote our band because they have more bands that are similar to ours.Plus they have bands with at least one female in them but either of the record labels have a full female band. Also our bands image is a mix of a few bands so our band can attract a range of audiences, for example psycho can attract the goths, cherry can attract the indie and Dead could attract the rock group. Plus the band would target the female audience because we are all female but also the male audience because we are all females and because of voyerism.

BBC programm

Our teacher recommended to watch a programme called 'Music, Money and Hip Hop Honeys' presented by BBC. It was about how women are represented in the music video and how people accept this fact. Before we even planned the music video we learnt about the theory of Goodwin and voyerism in the music video. The programme investigated in more depth of how women are presented and how they are treated also the fact most of the women even don't get paid. However the girl presenter says that a woman want to suceed in this industry because it makes you feel special and you can get good money out of this. I want to relate this to voyeurism in the music video, men can cover themselves with clothes but when women artist are presented they have to show their flesh in order to attract people's attention. Even though we know this is wrong but we just accept it as it is because everyone else does. Our music video does not contain a lot of voyerism of the artist but we used editing techniques to make the audience feel it. Like using the peep hole to create awareness of the band, because creating voyeurism will make the audience to demand more.

Audience Feedback

In one of our media lesson we were given the opportunity to see the rest of our class and receive some feedback on what they thought of our music video. Each group was given a sheet each with  table on it and some questions. In the table under the video skills was:

  • Holding a shot steady where appropriate,
  • framing a shot, including and excluding elements as appropriate,
  • Using a variety of shot distances as appropriate,
  • Shooting material appropriate to the task,
  • Editing so that meaning is apparent to the viewer,
  • Selecting mise-en-scene including colour, figure, lighting, objects and setting, Using varied shot transitions, captions and other effects selectively and appropriate,
  • Using sound with images and editing appropriately for the task.
The questions were:
  1. How successful is the representation of the artist in the video?
  2. Who do you consider to be the target audience for the artist/video?
  3. Do you think that this video will stand up to repeat viewing? Please state why you think this is or isn't the case.
  4. Please ass any further comments that you think would be helpful to the production group when writing their evaluations.
From the class there was 3 other groups to comment on our video and we had a sheet to comment on our own video too. Our highest score from our class mates was the last video skill which was Using sound with images and editing appropriately for the task, all groups gave us a big mark. We scored high in all the the other video skills except for Framing a shot, including and excluding elements as appropriate, shooting material appropriate to the task and using varied shot transitions, captions and other effects selectively and appropriately. I believe the reason we didn't score very high in these two skills was because no every shot was perfect. A few that was used from the editing were shaking and were moving when it should be still and vise-versa. But with the shooting materials appropriate to the task i believe we should of got higher, the only reason i could say we achieved so low is that the audience didn't quite understand the narrative to the music video, i think we could of thought of  clearer way to explain a bully theme but we had limited technology, limited people and a very limited time.
With the questions the fed back was positive, for the first question everyone said that it was clear and understood who the artist was. The second question's feedback was good, all the groups put Goth's, emo's, rock, teenagers i believed these were put due to the costumes that was chosen and the kind of music it is. But the teenagers bit was what we wanted to achieve and target audience to teens and that is what the audience believed the music video was aimed at. The third question was good everyone put good, but each group put a different reason, one put because the scene match's the clips, another put because it is similar to other videos and the last group put because it was interesting to watch. Only one group answered the final question and they put the only change should be at the end the artist looks at the camera; but because of a limited time we couldn't go back and film.

Commenting on audience's feedback

For the first question, the audience knew who the artist was as soon as they watched the video . I think iis because of the way she dressed and the camera movements also she is the only one who is singing. We wanted the audience to notice that it is a rock, punk, emo style that we tried to represent and by using narrative and props as well as editing helped for the audience to know that it is targeted to teenagers. THe whole point of making a music vieo is so that it will sell the artist and make the audience to demand more and the audience thought for the third question that it will stand up to repeat viewing. I think we achieved this because we did research on similar genre music videos and used camera movements, mise-en-scene, editing and props which the audience expects to see in an indie rock band music.
